Yet another way of looking at what is being said if some Sm, say S1, is much larger than any of the other Sm can be seen if we rewrite the equation as:

If all other Sm are small, the summation term becomes negligible and

can be ignored (but to the extent any of the (Pm*) aren’t small relative to the associated (P1*) for some of the eigenimages, they can’t be ignored … note this may come into play for any scan where nT1 is almost zero, even if (S1E1*) is relatively large).
