SPM Mail List

(May 28, 1996) STATISTICAL PARAMETRIC MAPPIMG (SPM) Help List - Functional Imaging Laboratory The SPM discussion list (spm-help+@andrew.cmu.edu) has moved to an automated listserver in the UK. All members of the old list have been moved to the new location. The new address for submissions is spm@mailbase.ac.uk. The old address will be set to forward to the new location in the near future.

Automated subscription and other features are described below in the list "introduction". The lists facilities are also available via the Web at URL http://www.fil.ion.ucl.ac.uk/spm/help, where an HTML version of the "introduction" can be found. In case of difficulties, the list owner can be contacted at spm-request@mailbase.ac.uk The list is maintained by members of the Wellcome Department of Cognitive Neurology.

Introduction

Statistical Parametric Mapping SPM is the generic name for the image processing and statistical techniques developed by members and collaborators of the Wellcome Department of Cognitive Neurology for the voxel-by-voxel analysis of functional [neuro]imaging data. The theory is implemented in a software package also called SPM.

The SPM discussion list is a UK-based worldwide email broadcast system for discussion and help with the methodology, implementation and use of Statistical Parametric Mapping in the SPM package. The list is not moderated, but is monitored and owned by members of the Wellcome Department of Cognitive Neurology.

Much of the approach and use of SPM is described in the academic papers, the on-line help, the SPMcourse documentation, and the SPM list digests. Subscribers are urged to consult these sources before using the discussion list as a helpline. Currently most messages are discussions of the theory and implementation of SPM, along with questions of it's use in non-standard circumstances.

Note: NIH and UC Davis have their own SPM lists to which this list feeds. The NIH SPM mailing list is at spm+@alw.nih.gov, and is administered by Neil Weisenfeld (weisen+@alw.nih.gov). The UC Davis list is at spm-help@marzen.ucdavis.edu, and is administered by Arthur Jones (arthur@adagio.ucdavis.edu).

The list is run at the UK's automated mailbase service. This list supercedes the temporary arrangement at Carnegie Mellon University (spm-help+@andrew.cmu.edu). All members from this list have been transferred to this new location. Our thanks to Tom Nichols (tn0o+@andrew.cmu.edu) for maintaining the help list in the interim period while the FIL was established.

Addresses

There are three email addresses to note:

Please note the differences between these addresses, particularly the first two. Commands should *not* be sent to spm@mailbase.ac.uk as this address is only for broadcasts.

Note also the following URLs:

Mailbase & Commands

The list is run at the UK's automated Mailbase service, which is funded by the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) of the Higher Education Funding Councils for England, Scotland and Wales. The service offers automated subscription, searchable digests and membership lists. Facilities are available via email commands (summarised below), anonymous ftp, or on the Web via the SPM discussion list page (http://www.fil.ion.ucl.ac.uk/spm/help). The Mailbase website is at http://www.mailbase.ac.uk/, from where online documentation of Mailbase facilities can be obtained (expired-http://www.mailbase.ac.uk/mbdocs.html). The spm list area on the Mailbase Web site can be accessed directly at http://www.mailbase.ac.uk/lists-p-t/spm.

Commands

Send commands to mailbase@mailbase.ac.uk

Note: If your mailer automatically appends a signature file to any messagesyou send out, you may find that the Mailbase software will attempt to interpret your signature as a command. To avoid this, insert the command stop on a line by itself, after any other commands you type. All commands should be put in the main body of your message, and not in the subject field.

Message archives

SPM list messages are archived. Each month's messages are grouped together in a file, maintained by Mailbase as searchable digests for a year. Older archives are available for downloading.

Change of Address

If your email address should change, please ensure your spm entry is kept up-to-date. You can do this yourself, by leaving spm under your old address, and re-joining under the new one.

When you send commands, such as 'leave' or 'suspend mail', to Mailbase, it uses your email address to recognise you. If your address (in the 'From' field of your message) does not match up with your list registration on Mailbase, then the software will not recognise you, and will inform you that you are not registered on the list, and so you will be unable to unsubscribe yourself or suspend your mail. This is why it is important to keep your registration up-to-date. If you should find yourself in this situation, you can contact the list owner (spm-request@mailbase.ac.uk).

Other Commands

Mailbase offers numerous facilities. A few are outlined here. For more information see the Mailbase documentation:
